Unlocking
the microbiome of
Latin American populations
What do we do?
A major limitation to understand the basic functions of the human microbiota in health and disease, comes from the unavailability of genetic and phenotypic data from specific populations with different diets, subsistence conditions and lifestyles. The Latinbiota international consortium aims to understand the composition and variability of the human microbiome in Latin American countries.
Our approach is based on high-throughput metagenomic sequencing and cutting-edge bioinformatics to discover and characterize human microbes in health and disease. We also use culture-based approaches to biobank and characterize human microbes that can constitute therapies of the future. Latinbiota is open to new collaborators committed to strengthening collaboration networks with international partners and within Latin America.
